TCREI Prompting Framework
TCREI was introduced in Google’s Prompting Essentials course.
The TCREI framework
T: Task
Name the exact thing you want created, changed, analyzed, or decided. “Help with my website” is not a task. “Rewrite the homepage hero for founder-led service businesses” is.
C: Context
Explain what the AI needs to understand about the business, audience, situation, goal, and constraints. Include the information that would change the answer.
R: References
Provide examples, source material, approved language, data, or past work. Tell the AI what each reference is meant to demonstrate so it does not copy the wrong thing.
E: Evaluate
Define how the output should be judged. What must be true for the answer to be useful? What should it avoid? What would make you reject it?
I: Iterate
Use the first answer as working material. Point to the exact sentence, choice, gap, or assumption that needs to change. Keep the parts that work and revise only what does not.
A simple prompt shape
Task: [What I need you to do]
Context: [What you need to understand]
References: [What to use and what each reference shows]
Evaluate: [What a strong answer must accomplish or avoid]
Iterate: [What to preserve or adjust from the last version]
You will not need every section at the same level of detail every time. The point is to stop making the tool invent the parts of the assignment you already know.
